The post Darkzero wins the ALGS Split 2 Playoffs first appeared on Kakuchopurei.]]>
After 4 gruelling and tiring days of gaming, the Apex Legends Global series Split 2 Playoffs ends with team Darkzero as your champions.

40 teams from all over the world came together at the Copper Box Arena in London to fight for the chance to get a share of the $1 million prize pool. The Split 2 Playoffs is the last LAN before the ALGS Championship and also one of the last chance for teams to qualify.

DarkZero who are currently the reigning ALGS champions and, TSM, the Split 1 winners, both became match point eligible in the third game. As the Finals went on, three other teams entered the race for the prized title after hitting the 50-point mark.

It was only in the seventh game that a winner was found. Rhys ‘Zer0’ Perry was the hero as DarkZero came out on top of a highly contested final ring to claim the trophy for his team, DarkZero to reclaim their throne and hold TSM off in second place. The North American teams really outshined all the other regions, as they held all top five spots in the finals (DarkZero, TSM, Oxygen Esports, XSET, and FaZe).

Darkzero had a rough Split 1, and the team almost didn’t make the Playoffs and placed 13th in London. Brody ‘Xynew’ Geissler, their newest member, could not have dreamed of a better LAN debut.

INTERESTING FACTS

TEAM COMPOSITION PICKRATES

The teams at the tournament seem to love Bangalore and Seer in 3-player compositions more than the rest of the team. While the latter character has received nerfs as of late, he is still picked due to his Tactical Ability.

INDIVIDUAL LEGEND PICKRATE

It comes off as no surprise that Seer has the highest pick rate. He received a couple of “nerfs” during the Dressed to Kill Event just recently. However, most pros have agreed that these nerfs are more of a buff towards him. Reworking Seer to be less scan-focused by severely nerfing his wallhack potential and making his tactical ability a menace for team fights, as it is almost undodgeable makes it frustrating to play against since there are no counters to it. And so, Seer stays on top.

You can watch a video here on TSM Imperial Hal and the TSM coach, ‘Raven’ on why they think Seer has been buffed.

TOP 5 WEAPONS

Prowler is the #1 kills (846), and is more than double the Nemesis (390) – and the CAR (379). SMGs are likely statistically to be that high due to all the teams waiting to fight late game. Shotguns are also not as consistent as SMGs which is why you don’t see it used as often.

In a recent post made by a famous Apex content creator, HisAndHersLive, they mentioned for an SMG nerf. Some pro players have agreed calling for a nerf to SMGs as a whole.

ALL END ZONES

If you’re a little bit of a geek, here are all the end zones during the 4 days at ALGS.

We also managed to get a picture with DarkZero’s Noyan “Genburten” Ozkose’s mother and brother after the event!

This ingenious idea ensured that attendees not only enjoyed the gaming extravaganza but also had a chance to walk away with some cool prizes.

In addition, there was also an arcade stick museum display (courtesy of Infinite Carnage founder Leon Soo), showcasing the many fighting tools from the way back until now in pristine condition. Even our custom Raretech joysticks (from Animangaki 2022) got the display treatment; it’s a lovely display that’s perfect for a venue that’s meant to celebrate the launch of a new fighting game era.

The Tournament

Undoubtedly, the highlight of the launch party was the tournament held by Infinite Carnage. 32 skilled players went head-to-head, showcasing their expertise and fighting spirit in intense matches. As the competition progressed, the tension grew, and the crowd was on the edge of their seats. The grand final was a spectacle to behold, with the two remaining fighters, Looi2211, a Chun-Li main, and Takawa, a Ryu main.

Looi2211 had come back through the lower bracket after being knocked down in the upper bracket quarterfinals by the eventual 2nd runner-up GigatonLT5, losing 2-1. Looi221 got his revenge in the lower bracket final where he knocked GigatonLT5 out of the tournament with a convincing 3-1 scoreline. Looi2211 went on to beat Takawa in the first best-of-5, 3-2, resetting the bracket, meaning he would need to beat Takawa once more to win the tournament. In a nail-biting Grand Final, the crowd erupted with applause and cheers, as Looi2211 secured the victory yet again with a close 3-2 scoreline, making the moment truly unforgettable.

For tournament prizes, GigatonLT5 received a PS5 copy of Street Fighter 6 as the 2nd runner-up. Takawa received a brand new PS5 controller as the 1st runner-up. And for the grand prize, Looi2211 received a new PlayStation fighting stick.

The overall atmosphere of the event was electric, as fans and enthusiasts came together to share their passion for the Street Fighter franchise. Laughter, friendly banter, and enthusiastic conversations filled the room, creating a sense of camaraderie among the attendees. The launch party successfully brought together a community of like-minded individuals, united by their love for the game.

While there were no exclusive announcements or reveals during the event, attendees had the opportunity to experience Street Fighter 6 firsthand. During the tournament’s break before the quarterfinals, everyone present was invited to play friendly matches against each other at the dedicated tournament stations. This allowed everyone in attendance to immerse themselves in the new game and engage in thrilling battles with fellow fans.

As the event came to a close, three lucky winners walked away with coveted earphones in the giveaway draw. The excitement and anticipation surrounding the announcement of the winners added an extra layer of thrill to the occasion.

The Street Fighter 6 Launch Party at ATO Gaming Cafe was an incredible celebration of gaming, fierce competition, and community. It provided an ideal platform for Street Fighter enthusiasts to connect, share their skills, and revel in the joy of the new game. With an electrifying atmosphere and unforgettable moments, the launch party undoubtedly left a lasting impression on all who attended, cementing the Street Fighter legacy in the hearts of fans in Kuala Lumpur.

On the 1st of June, I had the pleasure of attending a collective panel of amazing women across Malaysia on Women Moving Forward in Healthcare, Sports & STEM. It was a very last-minute decision for me to attend so I was extremely nervous.

The panel session was held at Microsoft’s office which was surprisingly colourful and cozy. I arrived an hour early and sat beside the refreshments table, thinking to myself, if I were to be awkward, at least I could do it sitting down here with a cup of tea in my hand. Soon enough I was joined by a fashionably dressed petite young lady who said she too was pitter-pattering around awkwardly.

But why am I even bothering to talk about this?

Tania, the young lady who sat beside me, writes for the Tatler Asia. She writes more about lifestyle and I well, I write on gaming, but we found a common ground. We bonded over the fact that growing up for us wasn’t easy when it came to beauty standards. We’re both tanned, with curly hair and that was not what the beauty standards were set at back when I was a kid, which was over 20 years ago. We talked about how we’ve definitely evolved and become more inclusive of different skin colours, body types, etc. I shared with her about how it made me happy that my favourite game, Apex Legends, added an Indian character to the game awhile ago, Rampart (Ramya Parekh), and one of her legendary skins is a classic traditional outfit.

Honestly growing up in a space where the internet is just widespread, I’d never dream that something like this would be in a video game when I was younger. Back then, women were so sexualized in games. There was a specific stereotype that the industry catered to. It’s one of the many reasons why I love games like Apex Legends and Overwatch. The inclusivity, the diversity. It gives everyone a voice. But enough about that, I want to talk about the lovely panel that truly inspired me while I was there.

First, let’s talk about LeadWomen, an organization that strives to ensure that workplaces and boardrooms are diverse, equitable and inclusive for all to thrive and succeed fairly. They run several programmes to empower women to grow and meet their full potential. The panel featured Deepti Saraf, the General Manager of Roche Malaysia, Sarina Sundara Rajah, a gymnast who has represented our country in the SEA games, Asian games, Commonwealth games, and well, she’s got a whole lot of achievements under her belt, but she is also the Founding President of Safe Sport Malaysia.

Then we have our very own Sophie Azlan, who as we all know and love here at Kakuchopurei. She is a game developer, a lecturer and has won pretty much an Oscar for gaming. The moderator of the day was Freda Liu, is a global speaker, a broadcast journalist, an emcee. Well, she has a lot going under her name, but to put it plainly, she is a powerhouse and she commands the attention of everyone in the room when she speaks.

On Harassment & Inequality

A recurring theme we see when it comes to women in the workforce, or in any industry for that matter, is harassment, whether it’s sexual, verbal. Harassment occurs, and why has it become a norm? We’re really not taken seriously, even in the gaming space. Something Sarina mentioned really stayed with me. “Malaysians are more reactive than proactive.” Why are we not doing more to prevent things and instead waiting for things to happen first before thinking about ways of prevention? We don’t really have to do much. Having conversations is more than enough and something achievable that everybody can participate in.

Sophie mentioned that yes, it’s wonderful being up here, championing us women. But really, what she wants most of all is to be recognized for her achievements, not just as a woman in her industry, but for the fact that she’s done so much more for the industry than what a lot of people have. I think this is something all women can relate to. In gaming, if you’re a woman, I’m sure you can resonate with me when I say speaking in game can be pretty terrifying, especially if it’s in a competitive environment. And when we do speak, it goes two ways. People either start acting “simpy”, a good example of this is sometimes players are happy to “drop” weapons for us women.

And on the other spectrum, people get hostile. “Go back to the kitchen.” YES. This still happens.

As someone who plays competitive games, I wish people would treat me normally. I’m just a gamer, trying to play games, trying to enjoy the same games that everyone else is playing. There’s so much we can expand on, and so much we can talk about, but I’m not here to lecture you or to accuse you of anything. I’m just a gamer. I just want to be seen as just that. A gamer.

The day ended when we all sat at different tables, representing different industries where we talked about ways we can solve the current issues we face. We definitely have a long way to go, but we have to start somewhere. The experience as I said, was something I did not expect. I wish more women would have the same opportunity that I did to attend something similar to this. With that, I leave you something that stayed with me from this session.

“Give more power to our dreams than our fears.” – Deepti Saraf, General Manager of Roche Malaysia.
